Task Force THOR Evaluation for Frontal Impact Regulation (TF TEFIRE)

Draft Terms of Reference

The primary aim of the WG is to provide guidance to the EEVC Steering Committee regarding the applicability of the THOR-M in UN frontal impact legislation, including ODB, MPDB and full-width frontal impact test procedures. The THOR-ModKit should be considered in this context.

Phase 1

  1. Evaluate the equivalence of the THOR-M and THOR-ModKit and advise whether one or both can be recommended for use in legislative crash tests.
  2. Repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) of full-scale vehicle crash testing, including dummy and test procedure components of R&R.
  3. Comment on handling, durability and certification procedures.
  4. Advise on the suitability of any of previously proposed seating procedures for application in UN Regulations.
  5. The group shall monitor and consider activities outside the group with regard to the THOR-M.

Expected results Phase 1

  • recommendation on the dummy type for regulation
  • status report on R&R
  • status report on handling, durability
  • recommendation on certification procedures and seating procedure

Phase 2

  1. Evaluate the potential benefit of replacing the current Hybrid III 50M dummy with the THOR 50M in each type of current or potential test procedure. To include consideration of the crash configuration; dummy kinematics cf. human (PMHS) kinematics; ability to detect potentially injurious loading (sensitivity); reliability for the assessment of lower severity injury risk (e.g. AIS 2); reliability for the assessment of injury risk for older occupants. The assessment also to include the THOR-Lx leg and its relevance for different crash test configurations.
  2. Recommend performance requirements for different collision configurations/severities and occupant ages, based on injury criteria and injury risk functions recommended by EEVC WG12. In particular multi-point chest deflection criteria and head injury criteria incorporating rotational brain injury metrics may enhance current vehicle safety assessments.

Expected results Phase 2

  • report on the benefit
  • recommendation on performance requirements

Phase 3

  1. Report on the status of development of THOR FE model(s), the availability of which is important to support vehicle development for legislative tests.
  2. Comment on a 5F version of the THOR dummy. To include determining the need/justification for this size of dummy (which will inform the type of test procedure and seating position it might best be used in). The WG should seek an informal link with NHTSA regarding development of and timescales for a 5F version of the dummy.

Expected results Phase 3

  • status report

The group shall report progress periodically to WG12 and the SC. As far as possible the meetings shall be held as virtual meetings (p.ex. WebEx).
The WG shall not to be concerned with the biofidelity or significant design changes to THOR dummy, except where these may directly affect the applicability of the dummy to a particular legislative or candidate legislative test procedure.
