WG12: Crash Dummies
WG12 “Adult Crash Dummies” is the longest running EEVC working group to date with involvement of governmental representatives and industrial experts of several Member States (France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom).
The first meeting of WG12 was held in November 1990. Similar to other EEVC groups, the objective of WG12 has been to guide research and development of test methods, tools and requirements, in particular the design and development of a universally acceptable frontal dummy.
In later years, the mandate of WG12 has been widened, taking on board other crash dummy related topics such as the advancement of the EUROSID-2 and WorldSID dummies. Most recently, WG12 has cooperated with WG18 (Child Safety) and WG20 (Rear Impact Protection) on child dummies and injury criteria, and low-severity rear impact “Whiplash” dummies respectively. Consequently, WG12 has adopted the name “Biomechanics”.
Terms of Reference
The purpose of the EEVC Working Group 12 is to provide the EEVC Steering Committee with advice concerning anthropometric test devices (crash test dummies) and biomechanical criteria related to injury, based upon scientific evidence, in order to support the development and enhancement of European safety standards and legislation.
WG12 - Specific Activities
1) Advanced Frontal Impact Dummy
Recommend partially or complete enhancements to the frontal impact crash dummy used in the European frontal crash test procedure.
- Assess the need for improved lower extremity injury assessment and recommend appropriate components and injury risk curves.
- Recommend advanced frontal dummy for regulatory use with appropriate injury risk functions
- Contribute to world-wide harmonization.
Deliverables:
D1: Recommendations for a harmonized THOR dummy (Aug 2006) - Completed
D2: Recommendations for improved lower extremity injury assessment (December 2007)
D3: Internationally harmonized frontal impact dummy (2010)
2) Whiplash Dummy
Recommend a specific dummy design for the sled based whiplash injury assessment procedure developed by WG20, based on a set of clearly defined biomechanical response requirements.
Evaluate the biomechanical performance repeatability and reproducibility of dummies used for Whiplash assessment.
Deliverables:
D4: Recommendation for a whiplash dummy and supporting criteria; including results of a comparison study of H-III, RID and BIORID dummies (October 2007).
3) Harmonization of Side impact dummies
Monitor world-wide activities regarding the development and evaluation of the side impact dummies of various sizes.
Recommendations on the usage of side impact dummies for future European regulation.
Deliverables:
D5: Status Report on the Development and Evaluation of the WorldSID 50th percentile male including an outlook for introduction into European test procedures (May 2008)
D6: Status report on the development of the small female WorldSID dummy, based on the activities performed in APROSYS (October 2007).
D7: Recommendation for the use of WorldSID 50M and 5F dummies in European regulatory testing (December 2009)
4) Advanced Child Dummies
Recommend new child crash test dummies to replace existing child dummies in ECE R44, based on biomechanical assessment and comparative testing.
Develop a set of injury criteria and tolerance values to be used with the Q-series.
Deliverables:
D8: Recommendation for a series of child dummies suitable for regulatory application with appropriate injury criteria (June 2007).
